Patch 0.29.1

From MCC Island Wiki

Patch 0.29.1 was a minor patch, which fixed some issues with the rewritten matchmaking system introduced in the previous patch.

Matchmaking Changes

In order to support the new multi-queue and soft SBMM (skill-based matchmaking) systems, we had to effectively rewrite our matchmaking system from the ground up. As you may have encountered, the new system hasn’t met our expectations. We also had to remove the player counts displayed in the queue, which has rightly caused some confusion as well as not providing all the information that you like to have.

The team has spent most of the day reworking the matchmaking system, primarily aiming to address the two largest issues it faces:

  • Games take too long to queue. Now that we have a lot more data about the queuing population and the SBMM system, we’ve been able to rewrite a large portion of the behind-the-scenes mechanics of the matchmaking system. We also noticed some issues with how the matchmaker would handle players that were partied, which would cause matchmaking to take a lot longer, particularly in larger parties. We’ve also reworked how the matchmaker handles these cases. This should mean that all players get into games considerably faster!
  • Players don’t have enough information about queues. We have also reworked the display system for matchmaking to provide more information. In particular, the following changes have been made:
    • Players queuing for Battle Box Arena will see an estimated wait time until their next game. As the special SBMM system used for Battle Box Arena doesn’t always put the players who have waited the longest into a game first, we created a new system to estimate the amount of time that you should have to wait until you can get into a game, given data such as the queuing population, games that are active, etc.
    • Players queuing for other games will see either an estimate until how long it should take for them to get into a game, or the number of players in the queue. Because the queue size doesn’t always accurately reflect how long you might have to wait (e.g. if a game of HITW is just about to end, a queue showing 1/8 doesn’t mean you will have to wait long!), all queuing players will see an estimate of how long it will take for them to get into a game. If the queue isn’t active, or it’ll be a long time until we can put you into a game, players will instead see the old queue size display just like before. This will work the same for players using multi-queue, who will instead see a range of waiting times based on all the games that they are queuing for, or the queue size for the most populated queue if we do not have the wait time information available.

We don’t expect the time estimates to be 100% accurate, but we will continue to monitor our systems for determining this estimate and make adjustments over the coming weeks.

These changes should help fix the two biggest problems players have been facing with the new matchmaking system, but please do keep reporting bugs and giving feedback! We will be consistently monitoring the matchmaking system to ensure we keep the queues running as best as possible. Thank you all for your patience whilst we dealt with this, and special thanks to everyone who has been reporting bugs and giving feedback - we couldn’t do it without you!
